NetXMS: The Open-Source Network Monitoring Platform

NetXMS: The Open-Source Network Monitoring Platform

What Is NetXMS?

Developed by Raden Solutions, NetXMS is a free, open-source platform for monitoring entire IT infrastructures, from network switches and routers all the way up to application-level services. It runs natively on Windows, Linux, and most Unix variants, and is licensed under the GNU General Public Licence version 2.

Key Features

Automated Discovery and Network Mapping NetXMS automatically discovers devices on your network and builds accurate Layer 2 and IP topology maps. It uses SNMP, LLDP, CDP, ARP caches, and routing tables to paint a live picture of your infrastructure — no manual input required.

Zoning and Proxy Agents For distributed or remote networks with unstable connectivity, NetXMS groups sites into zones with dedicated proxy agents, so all traffic routes through a single TCP port rather than requiring direct access to every device.

Flexible Alerting and Automation Event processing policies range from simple to highly complex. Responses can include alarm creation, script execution, email and SMS notifications, and helpdesk integrations — all configurable without modifying the core system.

Scripting and API Access NetXMS includes its own scripting language, NXSL, plus a full REST API and Python access to the Java API. Everything accessible through the GUI is also accessible programmatically, making deep integration with external systems straightforward.

AI Assistant (Version 6+) The latest major release introduces a conversational AI assistant, directly integrated into the management console. It can analyse alarms, summarise infrastructure health, and even assist with configuration — powered by a choice of local or cloud LLM backends.

Who Is It For?

NetXMS is used by managed service providers, banks, manufacturers, telecoms, and government organisations worldwide. It scales from small office networks to deployments monitoring over 5,000 devices and 300,000 data points. If your network is complex and your monitoring needs are serious, NetXMS is well worth a look.

NetXMS is free to download and use. Windows libraries are free to use up to 250 nodes. Commercial support, training, and an Enterprise edition with additional capabilities are available from Raden Solutions.
